Dominica Travel Guide: Essential Tips for Your Trip

Dominica presents itself as the Nature Island, a rugged Caribbean destination known for rainforest, rivers and volcanic scenery rather than resort strips. That character shapes the practical side of a visit too: the details of entry, money and transport are worth checking before you fly. This guide collects the essentials and points you to the official pages that matter. Facts below are checked against government sources as of October 2026.

Entry requirements depend on your nationality

Entry rules in Dominica depend on your nationality, so it pays to check your own passport. As of October 2026, the Government of Dominica's page 'Do I need a visa to enter Dominica?' lists the countries whose citizens do not need a visa and splits them by the length of stay allowed.

For British travellers, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) says holders of a British citizen passport do not need a visa and that border authorities will grant a stay of six months on arrival. If your plans depend on the exact number of days, confirm with the Dominica Passport and Immigration Department or a Dominica High Commission or embassy before you book. If you want to stay longer than the time granted, you can apply in person for an extension before it expires, and fees are paid at the Treasury after an interview with the Inspector-in-Charge of Immigration.

Whatever your nationality, officials look for a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, enough funds for your stay and a local address. The FCDO adds that, for British citizens, the passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the day you arrive. Visitors also complete the online embarkation and disembarkation (ED) card, which Dominica's official site says should be submitted no more than three days before travel. You receive a confirmation with a QR code to show alongside your passport at the port of entry. Departure tax is EC$86 or US$33, and the FCDO notes it is usually included in the cost of your plane ticket.

Money, language and staying connected

The Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) is the local currency. The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank has fixed it at EC$2.70 to US$1.00 since 1976, so you can budget with a stable rate. Discover Dominica says businesses across the island accept US dollars, British pounds and euros, and that most tourism-related businesses such as hotels, restaurants, tour operators and car rental agencies accept Mastercard, Visa and American Express. Even so, carrying some cash is sensible for small purchases, and it is worth asking in advance whether a smaller guesthouse or operator takes cards.

English is the official language. Many Dominicans also speak Kwรฉyรฒl, a creole based mainly on French and Carib vocabulary, so a friendly greeting in the local language is a nice touch. Discover Dominica gives local time as GMT-4, which is four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

Mobile data is useful on an island where you will often be navigating mountain roads, checking tour times or contacting a guide. A travel eSIM lets you download your data plan before you leave home, so you can install it in advance and switch it on after landing. It is still a good idea to download offline maps before you head into the interior.

Getting around the island

Taxis are not metered, but the FCDO says there are standard fares for most destinations. Registered taxis carry a windscreen sticker reading 'Nature Island's Standard of Excellence' followed by a number. Agree the fare before you set off, and note that drivers can usually be paid in US dollars. The government investment agency, Invest Dominica, adds that minibuses with number plates starting with H serve routes from Roseau and the airport to villages across the island, and that their fares are fixed by the government.

Driving is on the left. A visitor must hold a valid foreign licence and obtain a temporary Dominican licence, which the Inland Revenue Division says can be issued to visitors for a period of between one and three months and which authorised rental agents can also issue. The FCDO recommends arranging your car hire before you arrive. Allow extra time for every journey and enjoy the scenery along the way.

Useful numbers and services

The emergency number for police, ambulance and fire is 999. The Dominica China Friendship Hospital is the government hospital in Roseau, and Discover Dominica lists two other public hospitals, in Marigot and Portsmouth.
